At the dawn of machine translation, the Russian phrase “The flesh is weak but the spirit is still willing” was input into a U.S. Defense program designed to translate from Russian. Due to semantic ambiguity, the translated output was stunning. It ran: “The meat is rotten but the vodka is still strong”.
